As Russia invades Ukraine to overthrow the democratically elected government of Kyiv, social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter have highlighted some security steps to help users secure their accounts from unauthorized access.
Meta-owned platform Facebook has launched a feature that allows users in Ukraine to lock their social media profiles. The company also said that it has established a special operations centre to monitor the conflict in Ukraine.
"In response to the unfolding military conflict in Ukraine, we have established a Special Operations Center to respond in real time. It is staffed by experts (including native speakers) we can closely monitor the situation and act as fast as possible," Facebook's head of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher said on Twitter.
"We also took steps to help people in region protect themselves online. We've launched a new feature in Ukraine that allows people to lock their profile to provide an extra layer of privacy and security," the tweet added.
Also in line with Facebook, microblogging and social networking company, Twitter Inc. has posted tips on how users can secure their accounts against hacking, make tweets private, and even deactivate their accounts. The company made the safety tweets available in English, Russian, and Ukrainian.
With this feature, users in Ukraine will be able to lock their profile to prevent users who are not their friends from downloading or sharing their profile, or even seeing posts on their timeline.
As the war rages on, hashtags such as #UkraineUnderAttack, #RussiaUkraineWar, and #UkraineRussia are trending as millions of people around the world have taken to social media platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to protest the war, share their support, and well, others promote propagandas.
