Google Maps has crossed 10 billion installations on the Google Play Store to become the third app to achieve this new milestone, following Google Play service which did the same last year July, and YouTube this July.
Given how popular Google Maps has become, it's no surprise that the Google app has been downloaded this much. However, not all downloads were directly from the Play Store.
Just like most Google apps, Maps do come pre-installed on many Android smartphones, and each activation is counted as an installation. Google Maps reached 5 billion installs in March 2019 and hasn't slowed down since then.
Other apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Search, Gmail, and Chrome have all crossed 5 billion installs on the Play Store,
