Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung and Apple to become the number one smartphone maker in the world for the first time ever.
According to data provided by Counterpoint Research, Samsung slipped to the second position in global smartphone rankings in June 2021. The South Korean electronics giant shares of the global smartphone market dropped to 15.7%, with Apple shares also dropping to 14.3%. Xiaomi rose to the number one position with a 17.1% rise.
"Xiaomi's sales grew by 26% MoM in June 2021, making it the fastest-growing brand for the month," the report said. " Xiaomi was also the number to brand globally for Q2 2021 in terns of sales, and cumulatively, has sold close to 800 smartphones since its inception in 2011."
Xiaomi, over the years, has been achieving feat after feat. Three years ago, the Chinese company beat Samsung to become the number one smartphone brand in India.Just recently, Xiaomi managed to beat Samsung as the number vendor in Europe, while also toppling Apple to claim the number 2 spot as the world's second-largest smartphone maker. The Chinese company has been consistent with its efforts to fill in the vacuum left by fellow Chinese company Huawei after its withdrawal from the highly competitive smartphone market.
Funny enough, Xiaomi's expansion has been majorly in the largest markets where Huawei has been the dominant brand, until its recent decline.
"Ever since the decline of Huawei commenced, Xiaomi has been making consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline. The OEM has been expanding in Huawei's HONOR's legacy markets like China, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In June, Xiaomi was further helped by China, Europe and India's recovery and Samsung's decline due to supply constraints," Research Director Tarun Pathak said.
