One of those things that the Facebook Messenger app lets you do is to change your friend's name on Messenger, and assign them a nickname. This is good for close friends, family members, and Facebook friends that you prefer to identify them using a nickname.

Steps to Assign your Facebook friend a nickname on Messenger 

1. Open your Messenger app and login to it (be it on Android or iOS)

2. Locate the friend and click on it

3. There, your chats will open. Now click on the profile picture icon

4. Scroll down and click on 'Nicknames'

5. Under Nicknames you will see your profile icon and that of your friend. Click on the icon of that of your friend.

6. Now type in your desired username and click on 'Set'.

Now you and your chat will see the username in your chat history. Though you've managed to assign your friend a nickname, the effect won't take place on in group chats. You will have to repeat the steps to change the username.
