Following fears of an Internet shutdown in Zimbabwe ahead of a protest scheduled for today against government corruption and lack of political reforms, locals have resorted to the use of VPNs (virtual private network) to bypass any intended restrictions the government have in mind.
Zimbabweans expects the government to block access to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram, and others.
According to TunnelBear, a VPN service provider based in Toronto, Canada, reports that it has recorded twelve times spike in signups from Zimbabweans. In light of that, TunnelBear says it will be giving away free 10gb of data for those signing up from Zimbabwe to use.
However, the VPN becomes useless when the government decides to shutdown the Internet nationwide.Zimbabwe must #KeepItOn. TunnelBear has seen nearly a 12x spike in connections in Zimbabwe since protests began. In light of this, we’re giving away 10GB of data for one month to our users in Zimbabwe to support them in this critical time. https://t.co/4QsKyrZUYm— TunnelBear (@theTunnelBear) July 30, 2020
