"As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we're working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter," Twitter told The Verge. "Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy."
The micro-platform says it will commence to delete inactive accounts starting December 11 and thus has begun to reach out to inactive users to login and prevent their account from being deleted permanently.
"We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolong inactivity," Twitter told The Verge.
Twitter's inactive account policy "encourages people to actively login and use Twitter when they register an account" at least every 6 months so as to the account active prevent it being "permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity."
The Verge notes that Twitter won't only delete account of those who aren't active on the platform alone, the Micro-blogging platform will also delete accounts belonging to the deceased.
"We do not currently have a way to memorialize someone's Twitter account once they have passed on, but the team is thinking about ways to do this," A Twitter spokesperson said.
Twitter says the accounts removal process will take several months and won't just happen in a single day.
