Facebook owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced that it will drop support for some Android and iOS devices come February 2020.
Back in 2017, the popular messaging app announced that it will continue to support Android devices running on Android 2.3 until early 2019 and 2020. Support for Windows Phone was also to last till the end of 2019.
The latest update from the company says support for iOS 8.0 and older, Android 2.3.7 and older versions will be dropped next February 2020.
According to an updated statement on its blog, WhatsApp says it will provide support for devices running Android OS 4.0.3 and above, iPhone devices running iOS 9 and above.
"WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 9 or later," the statement read. "On iOS 8, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 8 device, you'll be able to use it until February 1, 2020."
WhatsApp encouraged iPhone users to update their iOS to the latest version available for their device so as not to be among those whose device will loss support.
For iOS users using modified versions of the iOS software (Jail broken or unlocked devices), WhatsApp says it won't offer support for such device because the modifications might affect the functionality.
WhatsApp will also support select phones running KaiOS 2.5.1 and above, that is, devices such as the JioPhone and JioPhone 2.
