WhatsApp users won't need to link their WhatsApp accounts to Facebook to use this feature. There will be a data-sharing API which is commonly used by several other apps to share the users Status as a Facebook story.
There will be a Share to Facebook Story button that will be under the users Status. Upon clicking on the share button, the user will be taken to the Facebook app to post the Story.
The Verge says that WhatsApp hasn't added the functionality for the app to share Status to other apps as the company wants users to make an active decision to share their status or not.
This new feature was spotted running on WhatsApp for Android. However, it seems the feature is being rolled out via server side as it isn't everyone on WhatsApp beta version 2.19.151 that has seen it.
