In a bid to lure more users onto its platform, cross-platform instant messaging and voice over IP (VoIP) application Viber has announced that members of the Viber Community can now add up to one billion members in group chats.

The Japanese company owned by Rakuten made the announcement on Thursday with hopes of driving more usage and users on the app.

According to TechCrunch, members of the groups will be able to interact with comments and reactions, and also group admins will be able to monetize the streams, tapping into a network of app partners and the large e-commerce and media business of Rakuten.

Viber was acquired by Rakuten in 2014 for $900 million and ever since then, Viber which was once heavily competing with WhatsApp for global presence in the messaging market has fallen down the pecking order.

Viber whose user-base hovers around one billion hopes to tap into this "large group chat" features which have grown increasingly popular with similar messaging apps.

As a freeware app made available on popular operating systems such as windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, the instant messaging company should start seeing results in no time given the popularity of this feature.
