A clone of US based cryptocurrency exchange site Bittrex have emerged on the web, targeting and emptying Bittrex users funds who fall prey to the scam.
The fake domain which is a clone to the original Bittrex site is actually a phishing site that steals login credentials of unsuspecting users and then use it to empty the money the user has in the exchange.
According to Tourpaul, a Bittrex user who fell victim to the scam wrote on the social news service Steemit explaining how he lost $2000 to the scammers.
"On August 15, 2017, my Bittrex account got hacked!! lost all my money, over 2grand!!! I figured out what happened! The hackers created a website that looks just like the real one! login page looks exactly the same!! And they will get your password and authenticator code once you try to log in on their website! It all happens in less than five minutes! I try to contact Bittrex but so far didn't receive any reply!," Tourpaul explained.
The victim went on to explain that he tried accessing the fake website the next day but it was gone! Tourpaul identified the fake site to be "www.blttrex(dot)com", a copy of the original site which is "www.bittrex.com". The difference in the domain name is the "i" and "l" which stands for an "L".
Another Steemit user also reported how the hacker(s) used Google AdWords service to rank their site on the first page of Google so as to easily delude their victims. A screenshot from the Steemit user shows the phishing ranking right above the original site! Though at the time of publishing this post, the site was taken down maybe by the owner or the hosting company.
