The spread of false news and information on different social media platforms has doubled with Facebook and WhatsApp which has billions of users taking the lead. In its bid to fight the spread of fake news, India has taken stringent measures to curb the spread of false information.

According to the indiatimes, a joint order issued by India's District magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra and Senior Superintendent of police states that any rumor or misleading information spread on any social media groups could land the admin(s) of the offending group in trouble when actions are not taken.
"There are several groups on social media which are named on news groups and also groups with other names which are propagating news and information which is not authentic. These are being forwarded without cross checking," it read.
The order encouraged the admins to report fake posts or those that hurts religious sentiments to be reported to the Police or the admin will be considered guilty.
"In the event of inaction from the group admin, he or she will be considered guilty and action will be taken against the group admin," the order said.

The order states that orders of the Supreme Court and various courts will be considered while initiating action. India is home to over 200 million WhatsApp registered users.
