Last month November, it was discovered that a custom firmware powering nearly 700 million phones had a backdoor injected in it which collects user data and send to China.

The recent discovery by Trustlook, the security firm that inspected the infection shows that data such as MAC address, IMEI number, IMSI, version number, call logs, SMS and other information are collected transmitted to China

According to Trustlook, they analyzed an app under the name “com.adups.fota” and found out that the app role of app is to collects users data from the infected device and upload to a domain called bigdata.adups.com every 72 hours. Trustlook says that the app is usually pre-installed on all the device that comes with the custom firmware.

Over 43 phone manufactures running custom firmware developed by Chinese Firm developer, ADUPS Technology suffered from this h*ck.  Popular manufacturers like Mediatek, Lenovo, BLU, ZTE and hoard of other makes the list.

So far, companies like BLU and others that were using ADUPS firmware have already switched over to Google for better security. Though most of these companies are Chinese manufacturers, most of them have huge market outside their region. An example is BLU which has sold over 120,000 in the United States alone.
