H*ckers have been launching huge distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on Liberia's entire internet using the Botnet 14, another Mirai IoT botnet. Experts believe that the future DDoS attack could reach 10Tbps, which is enough to take down the whole Internet in any nation state.
In a blog post, Security expert Kevin Beaumont said that Liberia has been witnessing a short duration of attacks over the week, although the h*ckers seem to be testing their strength on Liberia. The DDoS attack is primary focused on "Lonestar Cell MTN", the telecommunication company that provides Internet service to the entire of Liberia via a single point from the undersea. Lonestar Cell MTN is no stranger to DDoS attacks. Over the years, Lonestar Cell MTN has experienced several DDoS attacks on its service.
The h*ckers also went ahead to send a threatening message about UK. MalwareTech.com the tech site that monitors and such events also recorded a brief attack. According to Beaumont blog post, transmit providers confirms the size of the attack to be over 500Gbps in size although it only lasted for a short period. In my view, these attacks are just a figment of what is to come in the future, i see a very big threat lying ahead. In my next post i would explain everything.
